"Day is Done" is a gentle benediction, a setting of a lovely text by James Quinn (1919-2010), the Scottish Jesuit priest, theologian and hymnodist. In each stanza, Quinn contrasts expressions of human frailty with increasingly urgent pleas for God's grace. The music follows these dark-light contours, juxtaposing spare, exposed counterpoint against lush, traditional gospel-inspired harmonies, as the piece works its way through to a shimmering, faith-filled cadence.
