This is an interesting text because it invites us to consider the ignorant bliss of Eden right down until the last line: "The only new thing could be pain." What kind of twist is that? Well, that's just it, isn't it? A pain-free Creation would be nice, but that isn't a Creation that permits us to grow through trial and error. Lots of errors, in my case! And so this setting dwells in a too-tidy Eden until it, too, arrives at that profound, painful realization.
